In a study of twelve grade 9 destreamed students, all members of a TAGS (talented, able, gifted) group and all in French immersion, the students submitted the following work for comparison: hand generated work from the semester before the study began; work generated on palmtop computers; work generated on palmtops and edited on home or school computers; and work from two timed writing experiences, one done by hand and one generated on palmtops. The results revealed whether there were any differences in hand- and palmtop-generated work between the strongest and weakest students. Work of all the other students is described in terms of performance in spelling, structuring of sentences and paragraphs, and coherence. The teachers made recommendations regarding the availability of palmtops to students, their use by gifted students, and the need for a pilot study to investigate their use by learning disabled students. The results of the students' evaluation of palmtop use are also presented. Student skills observed include creative, critical, and logical thinking, and problem-solving and decision-making skills. The author draws conclusions on the benefits of small, powerful, portable computers for students attempting to achieve excellence.
